Lockdown Thoughts 2.13 - Learning and Development

The 2021 AskYourTeam survey closed this morning and I am glad to say that 86.2% of employees responded. Thank you so much for your input. I can assure you we will read every word of the nearly-400 comments made, and we will do our best to plan actions to resolve our deficiencies.

At first glance the numbers continue to show that Learning and Development is an area we should focus on. The question “HamiltonJet provide opportunities for me to develop my skills and competencies and actively encourages career development” actually dropped from 62% to 59%. We are currently recruiting for a new Organisation Development Manager to work on some new initiatives, but it is also worth reminding you of some of the opportunities already available.

Firstly, the company frequently co-funds tertiary learning. This includes degrees, MBAs, professional qualifications and higher level trade skills through NZQA. This is open to anyone who is serious about learning and improving their skills. We have accepted almost every application for co-funding, so if it interests you then please take some time to research your options while you are still stuck at home!

We also pay professional membership fees for those who undertake learning and development through membership of a professional body.

Next, we actively encourage career moves within the company. Roles are always advertised internally before externally, and we have a preference to taking an internal candidate where we think they are a good fit to the role. Last year 5% of our employees had a role change or were promoted, so this does happen. Please keep a look out as more opportunities will be coming up in due course.

Finally, we take 3-5 new apprentices every year, often from within our own ranks. The picture is of the full crew of apprentices last year when Jacinda Arderne visited.

We also commit to improve. Our new OD Manager will assist us in getting to the bottom of what we could do better and I look forwards to working with them and creating new opportunities.
